Can I install my convertible top?

Replacing a convertible top is not rocket science, but it does take average or a little better than
average mechanical ability.   Can one install a convertible top without professional skills?  Of
   course.

The nuts and bolts part of the installation is pretty straightforward and within the grasp of most
average do it yourselfers.  Different years/makes/models have particular characteristics, making it
imperative that one have quality instructions for your particular year-make-model.  Our videos
provide step by step in depth instructions in great detail.

The installation area must be above 70 degrees F.  Convertible materials get more difficult to work
with as the temperature falls below 70 degrees.

To help the first time installer, AOK Sales, LLC has compiled a library of installation DVDs
I recommend that you watch the entire video before beginning the installation.

If you are in PA and need a top installed, take a look at this page for top installation.  We may
install it for a significant savings if we don't already have it in our library
.

Can I replace my convertible window without replacing the top too?

The short answer is sometimes, the long answer is.........

Convertible tops have several types of windows.

In two piece tops, the window unit, whether glass or vinyl, is separate from the top and can be
replaced without installing a new top.
This link will show you a window in a typical two piece top before the top goes on. The video shows
a vinyl window, but the procedure is the same for a glass window.

When replacing a window on a two piece top, the rear half of the top must be removed to access
the window unit because the window was installed before the top.  You will do nearly as much work
removing and replacing the top to install a window as you would replacing both the top and
window.  For that reason, it is prudent to inspect the top before making a decision to replace the
window only. If the top is  worn, you will save time and money in the long run by replacing it at the
   same time as the window.

On one piece tops, the window is an integral part of the top. The best way to replace the window is
   to replace the entire top.
However it is possible to replace the window only, if the window is vinyl, not glass. On those cars,
the top must be removed completely from the vehicle. The damaged window is cut from the
top and used as a pattern to cut a new window from .40 gauge clear vinyl. The new window is the
sewed into the top and the top replaced on the vehicle. The sewing operation is best left to a
professional with a heavy duty commercial sewing machine.
Some one piece tops have a glass window. They usually cannot be replaced without replacing the
top. A few tops have glass windows installed in them in such a way that they are replaceable.
There are only a few models with this feature. Premier among them is the VW Beetle, Rabbit and
   Cabriolet
.
These must be addressed on a case by case basis.

Our instructions for replacing tops also include the instructions for installing the window.

Instructions for replacing tops and windows can be found here.

What and  where are "side tension cables"  and must I replace them when I replace my top?

Most convertible tops use side tension cables to hold the side of the top (over the side windows)
tight against the frame.  This keeps air, dust and rain from entering the car when it is moving.

If your side tension cables are not broken or showing damage from rust, they can be reused.

See our short video on side tension cables.

What and where are "bow pads" and must I replace them when I replace my top?

Most convertible tops use bow pads to protect the top material from abrasion by the folding
mechanism. They also assist in keeping the folding mechanism aligned properly.

On older cars the bow pad was made in several pieces with a cotton or foam filler.  Newer cars just
   use a heavy webbing.

If your bow pads are in good shape, they can be reused.

Will I need special tools to replace a top or window?

Most of the tools needed will be found in the average do it yourself garage.  The possible
exceptions may be a pneumatic or electric staple gun and a staple puller.

How long will it take to install a top?

Time varies greatly with different makes and models.  A professional will install most tops in 4 to 8
   hours.
I advise the first time installer to set aside a weekend.

Will my VW Beetle, Rabbit or Cabriolet top have a window installed in it?

What parts must I buy to replace a top?

You will need a top and depending on the year/make/model, perhaps a separate window unit.
You should check your tension cables, weatherseals and pads in advance and order them if they
    are needed.
